The Polurrian on the Lizard, previously known as the Polurrian Bay Hotel has had a little revamp, and we were lucky enough to be invited to their launch party.
Two things that make the personality of this hotel shine through:
1/ The staff uniform is the most relaxed, yet sassy, I’ve seen. You can always spot a member of staff as they are wearing red shoes – usually trainers or baseball boots – along with a red belt and a denim shirt. That puts my hotel days to shame where I was forced to wear a waistcoat and bow tie!
2/ This was the afternoon tea we were ushered into on arrival…
Seriously, completely nuts!
An entire Willy Wonka themed spread, with the cutest little edibles.
Hats off to the kitchen for bringing that to life!
The Polurrian on the Lizard Hotel
There has been a hotel on this site since 1890, and it has had its fair share of celebrity visitors over the years.
From Winston Churchill to Clark Gable.
Today’s hotel (the original being burnt down in a fire in 1909) is focused on just one thing, and that my friends, is the view.
You enter the hotel from the back, into a sumptuous dark grey foyer.
This immediately forces your eye beyond the open doors ahead, to take in the wall of glass and the sweeping view beyond.
It’s a dramatic view for sure, and the bar and lounge area makes total use of it.
Whilst we were blessed with the most perfect weather during our visit, I imagine nowhere better to sit on a stormy day either.
The patio beyond is a glorious place to sit during the warmer months, with the outdoor pool and kids play areas beyond.
On our second day, just as we finished lunch, the folk on the next table brought our attention to something going on out in the bay.
I rushed out with cameras in tow, to witness a huge pod of dolphins playing in the water below!
It was a magical experience, and one we are not likely to forget in a hurry!
The Food
Unsurprisingly, this is the bit I always get most excited about!
Wacky afternoon teas aside, dining at the Polurrian is just as I’d expect: fresh, relaxed and local.
The restaurant opens at midday and stay open till 9pm, allowing guests to come and go as they please.
Above is my Chicken Caesar Board: wood fired chicken, smoky bacon, croutons, charred lettuce, Parmesan shavings & anchovies.
On the right Jonny had: Mustard basted beef burger, mature cheddar and homemade burger relish.
Both meals were perfect.
Breakfast was also superb.
Although sadly, in my hurry to soothe my hunger pangs, I forgot to photograph our breakfasts.
So, have a random shot of the croissants instead!
Jonny had a full English, and I had smoked salmon, avocado and poached eggs.
Again both hit the spot and set us up for the day in style.
The Area
For those that haven’t visited The Lizard before, you’re in for such a treat!
The Lizard can be found on the most South Westerly tip of Cornwall/England/UK.
It’s known as the Wild West, not because you’re likely to trip over any cowboys during your stay, but because the coastline is so wild and raw.
It’s the perfect area for exploring if you like hiking, and the hotel is on the South West Coast Path.
And the hotel is dog friendly, so feel free to make this an adventure for all the family.
On a sunny day, the water around this part of Cornwall is just stunning.
The bright, vivid turquoises and teals make you imagine you’re somewhere far more exotic.
And the wildlife you’re likely to see is amazing, such as the dolphins we were entranced by.
