After our early blight attack here, I thought it time to share a little mid-season update.
The Cornish summer has once again been damp, which sadly makes the perfect growing conditions for blight. However, we have fared better than ever before in our attempt to minimise the damage.
Remember the pots I sunk into the ground next to each plant? These have had tremendous affect in preventing the spread of it. So long as the hose is only on gently, the water collects in the pots taking it directly to the roots without splashing the plant.
Removing the lower foliage from each plant has helped too. Any leaves laying on the ground, are bound to get & stay wet longer than those swaying in the breeze. And as blight starts on the lower leaves, this did rid us of a huge amount of it.
Our trusses are heavily weighted down with fruit, the majority of which are still green. We have taken a substantial amount of tomatoes off already, some of which have made it to the freezer.
I posted this picture yesterday as well, but it shows how happy the fruit & leaves are. There are still some patches of blight, but it doesn’t seem to be spreading like it has done in previous years.
All in all, a big sigh of relief from the depths of the Cornish Mizzle :)
I haven’t felt the need to try the anti blight treatment of milk & water, but if anyone else has, please let us know in the comments how effective you’ve found it to be.
