I met a lovely new friend this week by the name of Julia. She had heard we had a crazy bumper crop of tomatoes this year, so she gave me a jar of her Tomato Relish and the recipe – what a perfectly practical friend! :)

It is one of the nicest tomato based relishes I have ever had, sweet with a gentle spice kick. I tried it atop a cracker on its own which was OK, but when I snuck in some cheddar cheese too, it came alive in my mouth. I may well pay for eating this little bit of cheese, but I reckon it’ll be worth it!
She said it was OK to share the recipe with you all, so here it is.
Julia’s Tomato Relish
4lb Skinned tomatoes
4lb Large onions
3/4 pint cider vinegar
1lb sugar
2 tbsp salt
1 tsp curry powder
1 ½ tsp dry mustard
Pop everything into a large saucepan together, bring to the boil then simmer for an hour.
Take off the heat, then add 4 tbsp cornflour mixed with ¼cup cider vinegar.
Bring back to the boil and it’s ready to can or jar.
It sounds so simple, and I can vouch for how good it tastes!

I really want to try this, however could you ask your friend if she thinks it would be possible to use tinned plum tomatoes please? I have a load to use up and just wondered if it would work?Thank you x
Hey Helen, I’ll go and ask her! Are you on Facebook? If so, come and see her response at http://www.facebook.com/Hedgecombers :)
Just received this back from Julia, hope this helps!
Hi Jane :)
Truth is I’ve no idea!
I’ve only ever used fresh but it would be interesting to know what happens if Helen tries it with tinned :) x
